Handle HTTP failures explicitly and avoid unnecessary repeated requests.

Fresh reads during writes
Updates for the same map are serialized and use an InnoDB row lock while merging. A database failure rolls back both the stockpile state and its history entries.
Expired tokens
A 401 response requires a new authorization flow. Do not retry an expired token indefinitely.
